The Ladies of Charity of Holy Ghost Church is an active group of ladies with a passion to serve the down trodden and the needy through outreach programs and fund rising activities. To meet this end several services are rendered chiefly, helping the needy and sick, visiting homes for the aged and granting donations to them in cash and kind. In addition, the setting up of the Asha Kiran Helpdesk for parishioners of our parish to assist those requiring Government Minority Christian Pension, providing funds for medical needs of deserving members of the parish and contributing to charitable funds usually to the tune of Rs. 6000, are noteworthy.
Our other services include 2 of our members helping in the Parish School and College Scholarship applications desk, 3 members with The Serra Club which works for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life, 2 members helping the Little Sisters of the Poor with craft and other activities on a regular basis, one member being in the Committee of the Medico Pastoral Home and Cancer Care, each of the Ladies involved in some of the other parish activities such as the Choir, lector’s group etc. and assisting the SVP during Food Fests and other programs.
We raise funds to support our charitable activities mainly through the sale of craft items made by members, jewellery, aprons etc., sale of donated and used articles and clothing, sale of breakfast and food items like cakes, sweets, sandwiches etc., sale of pickles and preserves made by the Ladies and the annual Ladies Fellowship Get-together for ladies of our parish and neighbouring parishes.
In order to be proficient at the above services, a team of ladies attended the Help Desk Training conducted by Mr. Raymond Saldanha and KROSS. Various schemes of the Karnataka Government for Minority Christians were explained at the seminar. In August a bead-jewellery-making class for LOC members was also held.
True to our mission and passion in serving the marginalised and the needy of our parish we extended our services in various ways during 2016. The Asha Kiran Help Desk to be run by the LOC members was inaugurated on March 6th. The Asha Kiran Team set up a desk on Holy Ghost Church premises to help pensioners with various documentations relating to the application of pension. The team also undertook to submit the applications to the Town Hall Municipality.
Our donations to religious and charitable organisations include Rs.6000 to Infant Jesus Charity Home and Orphanage in April and Rs.10000 to the Little Sisters of the Poor in July. In September, Rs 2000 was donated to Catholic
Women’s League for Mother’s Day gifts and lunch for needy women. Some Members gave personal donations of clothes, food items and cash to the Daughters of Charity who have adopted 18 orphan girls from the streets of
Bangalore. Sr. Rose the Provincial of the Daughters of Charity came and addressed the group and thanked us for our contribution.
Our fund raising programs for the year were the November Bazaar held on November 6th from 8AM to 12 noon and the annual get-together on December 2nd, the proceeds of which will go towards Christmas Hampers for the 60 recipients of St. Gerard’s Kitchen.
