Reading 1, Sirach 44:1, 10-15
1 Next let us praise illustrious men, our ancestors in their successive generations.
10 But here is a list of illustrious men whose good works have not been forgotten.
11 In their descendants they find a rich inheritance, their posterity.
12 Their descendants stand by the commandments and, thanks to them, so do their children's children.
14 Their bodies have been buried in peace, and their name lives on for all generations.
The Word of the Lord.
Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 132:11, 13-14, 17-18
The Lord gave them bread from heaven.
13 For Yahweh has chosen Zion, he has desired it as a home.
14 'Here shall I rest for evermore, here shall I make my home as I have wished.
17 'There I shall raise up a line of descendants for David, light a lamp for my anointed;
18 I shall clothe his enemies with shame, while his own crown shall flourish.'
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower;
All who come to him will live for ever.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel, Matthew 13:16-17
"Since they had no root they withered away"
16 'But blessed are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear!
17 In truth I tell you, many prophets and upright people longed to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Reflection: Even today, much of what the Bible says and means remains mysterious and unreachable to those who are not seeking after God's will. The Spirit's work to illuminate Scripture comes only to those who have faith in Jesus! Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus still is helping the earnest follower, the dedicated disciple, to know his will. As he explained the parables to his disciples, we too get to sit in on his explanations and because he has ascended into heaven and poured out his Spirit on those who have been born again in him (Titus 3:3-7), we have the Spirit's help in understanding and living his truth.
Prayer: Father, thank you for sending Jesus to live the truth, speak the truth, and reveal the truth so that I might know your will and your love more clearly. Open my eyes and heart and reveal to me your truth as I seek after Jesus and search your Scriptures. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Father, may I put in a good day's work each day on Your farm (see 1 Cor 3:8-9).
