Friday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time - 13th October 2017
Reading 1, Joel 1:13-15; 2:1-2
13 Priests, put on sackcloth and lament! You ministers of the altar, wail! Come here, lie in sackcloth all night long, you ministers of my God! For the Temple of your God has been deprived of cereal offering and libation.
15 'Alas for the day! For the Day of Yahweh is near, coming as destruction from Shaddai.'
1 Blow the ram's-horn in Zion, sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let everybody in the country tremble, for the Day of Yahweh is coming, yes, it is near.
2 Day of darkness and gloom, Day of cloud and blackness. Like the dawn, across the mountains spreads a vast and mighty people, such as has never been before, such as willnever be again to the remotest ages.
The Word of the Lord.
Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 9:2-3, 6, 16, 8-9
The Lord will judge the world with justice.
2 I rejoice and delight in you, I sing to your name, Most High.
3 My enemies are in retreat, they stumble and perish at your presence,
6 the enemy is wiped out -- mere ruins for ever -- you have annihilated their cities, their memory has perished. See,
9 May Yahweh be a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble!
16 Yahweh has made himself known, given judgement, he has ensnared the wicked in the work of their own hands.Muted music
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
The prince of this world will now be cast out,
and when I am lifted up from the earth
I will draw all to myself, says the Lord.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel, Luke 11:15-26
"If it is by the finger of God"
15 But some of them said, 'It is through Beelzebul, the prince of devils, that he drives devils out.'
16 Others asked him, as a test, for a sign from heaven;
17 but, knowing what they were thinking, he said to them, 'Any kingdom which is divided against itself is heading for ruin, and house collapses against house.
18 So, too, with Satan: if he is divided against himself, how can his kingdom last? - since you claim that it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out.
19 Now if it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out, through whom do your own sons drive them out? They shall be your judges, then.
21 So long as a strong man fully armed guards his own home, his goods are undisturbed;
22 but when someone stronger than himself attacks and defeats him, the stronger man takes away all the weapons he relied on and shares out his spoil.
23 'Anyone who is not with me is against me; and anyone who does not gather in with me throws away.
25 But on arrival, finding it swept and tidied,
26 it then goes off and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and set up house there, and so that person ends up worse off than before.'
The Gospel of the Lord.
Is Jesus the Lord of your mind, heart, and home?
Reflection: If we want to live in true freedom, then our "house" (the inner core of our true being) must be occupied by Jesus where he is enthroned as Lord and Savior. The Lord assures us of his protection from spiritual harm and he gives us the help and strength we need to resist the devil and his lies (James 4:7). The Scriptures remind us that God is our refuge and his angels stand guard over us:
"Because you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High your habitation, no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent. For he will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways"(Psalm 91:9-11).
Do you know the peace and security of a life submitted to God and his word?
Prayer: "Lord Jesus, be the ruler of my heart and the master of my home. May there be nothing in my life that is not under your lordship." Amen.
Jesus has power to cast out the Deceiver and set us free.
